Left Field is live – welcome to a new collective voice for the UK left

Today we’re launching Left Field.

We’re an independent news, opinion and analysis platform reporting the stories the mainstream media won’t touch – and telling them the way the mainstream press won’t. We cover grassroots movements, trade unions and left politics in the UK and beyond, tracking developments as they happen and setting them in the context of the wider story of left and community organising.

Why we exist

Trust in the media has been falling away for years, and it’s not hard to see why. Too often, mainstream outlets peddle false balance on some stories and straightforward bias on others – Gaza and migration are two of the clearest examples – while giving far too little attention to the things that actually shape ordinary people’s day-to-day lives – their pay, their housing, their workplaces and their communities.

We want Left Field to be different. It’s written by and for working-class people who want to see change and are hungry for the ideas that will help them get there. We’ll cover the political and economic news of the day like everyone else, but always through the lens of what it actually means for real people across the country. And we’ll go behind the headlines to uncover what’s really going on – the social, cultural, political and trade union stories that rarely get a hearing in the establishment press.

How we’re organised

Left Field is run as a collective, not a conventional newsroom hierarchy. Editorial direction and content aren’t dictated top-down by a single figure – decisions about what we cover and how are shaped collectively, by the people who take part. That doesn’t mean anything goes. Every piece we publish goes through editorial oversight for accuracy, fairness and legal soundness. Collective doesn’t mean uncurated – it means the direction of the platform belongs to the people building it, not to any one person’s personal line.

We have no rich backers, and we’re not looking for any. Left Field is funded entirely by the people and organisations who support what we’re trying to do.

Original journalism, interviews, opinion and debate – with contributions from organisers working in communities, workplaces and campaigns across the country. We’ll be publishing regularly at leftfield.org.uk and via our free weekly enews.

We're also seeking membership of the Independent Media Association and will be registering with the independent press regulator, Impress, because transparency in independent media matters to us as much as anything else we do.
